Introducing Pictures From Afar

We began with sketchbooks and curiosity.

A handful of friends — artists, walkers, and the sort of people who slow down to watch light change — started taking small groups out of town. The goal wasn’t sightseeing, and it wasn’t ticking boxes. It was simply to give time and place the room they deserve: to paint at dawn, to walk slowly through villages, to eat food that had a story. Those weekend trips became workshops, those workshops led to gallery nights, and the gallery nights invited new conversations. That quiet, accidental work grew into Pictures From Afar.

But we are more than trips. We are an ecosystem built around making, sharing, and care.

Our three pillars are simple, and they hold everything we do:

  • Art Collection. Original works produced on the road and in nearby studios. Each piece comes with a note: the place it was made, who made it, and the small story that stitched it together. We show, sell, and sometimes commission pieces — always with transparency and respect for the artist’s process.

  • Painting Retreats. Multi-day gatherings for makers and curious people. These are small, guided, and intentionally paced: mornings for observation and practice, afternoons for experimentation, evenings for meals and conversation. Materials and instruction are included, and every retreat ends with a moment to reflect on what was made — and why.

  • Guided Expeditions. Active, place-first journeys led by local guides. These are for people who want to move — up ridges, along lakes, into markets — yet still want time to notice. We build sketch stops and short studio sessions into routes so that observation can become practice, and practice can become story.

We are local-first, always. That means partnering directly with guides, artists, hosts and small businesses. It means paying fairly. It means thinking about the footprints we leave — on land, on livelihoods, and on the stories we borrow. Success, for us, isn’t only bookings or sales; it is the lives we touch and the opportunities we create.

What makes our trips different is not only what you do, but who you do it with.

Expect small groups and human-scale logistics. Expect friendly instruction, not a one-way lecture. Expect to carry back more than photos: a page in your sketchbook, a finished canvas, or a memory that keeps returning. Expect to meet people — local artists, cooks, guides — who will reframe what you thought you knew about a place.

If you’re deciding whether to join, here are three simple ways to start:

  1. Visit the gallery. See what’s been made — the paintings, the notes, the place names that read like poems.

  2. Book a day or weekend retreat. Start small. Learn a technique. Leave with work and new friends.

  3. Join an expedition. For those who want both movement and making: multi-day routes with rest stops for sketching and painting.

We also host community programs — workshops with local schools, commission programs for artists who need materials, and gallery nights that feature both visiting and Rwandan artists. If you collect, collaborate, or want to support local makers, we’d love to hear from you.

Finally: we want this to be inclusive. You don’t have to be an artist to come. You don’t need fancy gear. Curiosity and openness are the only prerequisites. We welcome beginners, seasoned makers, travelers, collectors and people who simply want to sit and watch light become color.

If you’d like to start the conversation, reach out — we reply to most messages within 24 hours. And if you want to see what our trips feel like before you book, scroll through our stories: field notes, guest portraits, and short dispatches from the places where we work.

Welcome — whether you’re joining for a day or staying to learn. Come for the view. Stay for what you make of it.
